After a not so fabulous lunch at Cafe Bohemia (see corresponding section), a trip to the Cupcake Spot (http://www.thecupcakespotinc.com/) was a vital Saturday necessity. Only problem? I LOVE cupcakes, but only like to eat the frosting.

I know. It’s weird. Who doesn’t like cake?

I’m not saying I never eat cake. (Let me eat cake on occasion, please). But really—I’m a frosting kind of gal.

When I lived in Manhattan I had to go right by Magnolia Bakery every single day.  And every day, I went, nope! Not in the mood for cupcakes. But then. During lunch. Occasionally. I would get a HUGE hankering for frosting. I would just eat the top and throw the rest of the cupcake away.  (I certainly have difficulties giving it away… The bottom of a cupcake is much like the bottom of the muffins.  As that famous Seinfeld episode depicted, NO ONE wants just the bottom of a pastry.)  I used to sneak in to Magnolia Bakery, smile, and ask if I could just get frosting.  Of course, this is Manhattan. They weren’t too nice.  “Whyd’ya want that?” I was asked on one occasion, by a stern New Yorker. So, I did the only thing I could think of…. I lied.  I told them I was a gluten-free person. (Not true, but I have many friends who are—and am continually amazed by the ingenuity they apply to cooking/recipes!) I got my frosting.

So at the Cupcake Spot on Central, I had my doubts about just being able to get a dose of cream cheese frosting.  My friend encouraged me. What’s the worst that could happen?  I put on my best smile and decided to just ask.  Sure enough?

“Oh we do that all the time!” The woman smiled at me, encouragingly.  “We sell shots of frosting for a dollar! We even have shot glasses.”

My mouth dropped.  “Are you serious?”

“Yes! It’s really popular at our Tampa location,” She affirmed.

I ordered a shot of cream cheese frosting. I paid my $1.07 (with tax!) and emerged triumphant—joyously walking out into the beautiful 70-degree Saturday afternoon. I tasted the cream cheese frosting.  No cake to battle with. Just straight frosting.  Brilliant!

The Cupcake Spot had me from the frosting… I’ll definitely be back!
